Narrow Minds Ahead

Vine, composite charcoal, charcoal pencil on newsprint. Original dimensions: 18x24 inches.
Picture used was a shot of the stuffed dog in the background and a shot of the road sign (though the text is different, obviously). Other images used include: Vader Cheney, Free Speech Man, a combined image of the statue of liberty and a supermodel and, finally, those cute little critters.
Again, hopefully self-explanatory: free speech for everyone... even douche bags.

By the way, ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) is responsible for, among other more legitimate practices that other agencies like America's FCC also participate in, Internet Censorship. For more on this, read the wiki article on ACMA, but suffice to say, I don't know if Australians can look at 4chan without having their IP's tracked and shut down.

Common Sense and Common Sensibility

Vine, composite charcoal, charcoal pencil on news print. Original dimensions: 24x18 inches. The photo used here was a picture of a game of King's Cup (rules will not be described here) with surrounding cards. Also used were graphics again from 4chan and other sites (Deadpool, Joe Camel, Coke-girl, heroine and Cheech and Chong).

As Deadpool so adeptly puts it: "Shhh, my common sense is tingling."

After a Gold Rush

Vine, composite charcoal, charcoal pencil on news print. Original dimensions: 24x18 inches. The picture used was taken on the drive to Kahalu'u where my parents live, just off Likelike highway.

The title alludes to the song "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young and, like the song, the drawing constitutes my attempt at a warning against further harm to the environment.

At the time of the song, (1970) the threat of nuclear war with the USSR was, in my opinion, the likely cause of the apocalyptic world described (references to "burned-out basements" etc.).  In my drawing, that threat is still relevant, though more mundane threats such as the sheer volume of fossil-fuel producing vehicles on the road is represented in the fore-ground.  In the song, a group of humans leaves earth on a "silver ship" to fly "mother nature's seed to a new home in the sun."  In my drawing, this ship exists also, though the individuals escaping the ravaged planet earth are represented by a dollar sign, the sign of the Illuminati and a crown-wearing figure; symbols of wealth, power and influence.  Would the poor, or even middle-class be able to escape a planet destroyed by the rich and powerful?

Psycho Wallstreet Freak-out

Vine, composite charcoal, charcoal pencil on news print. Original dimensions: 24x18 inches.

Another in the series for my Spring '09 final portfolio at UH Manoa.
Anyone who's lived in the dorms as a freshman at UH should recognize the tower dorms from a photo I snapped outside Quickzone.

Done with recreations of images from 4chan and other websites (Vageta: then who was phone?, I am a banana from Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected Cartoons", and Chris Tucker from 5th Element).

Have's and Have Nots

Hopefully fairly self-explanatory.  The girl is bare-foot, dressed in patched clothing etc.  Behind her are a lot of shoes.
